Fear is a funny thing. It exists in its purest form as a means to protect us from harm. It evokes a “fight or flight” response in us instinctually which becomes habit forming. In essence, because we are habitual creatures, we often react to fear in the same way without investigating its source. The downside of this is that often our fear is heightened by our imagination and what seems scary is actually an illusion and won’t kill us.
Sure. There are situations like war or natural disasters where fear plays out as it was intended and tries to keep us safe but, otherwise, things like people’s opinions of me, fear of failure, spiders, etc. are not going to kill me and shouldn’t prevent me from moving forward and living my life.
Take this blog for example. I’ve wanted to write a blog for YEARS! I was inspired to do so throughout my early motherhood years but never knew what to write about and feared “getting it wrong” or seeming pompous. Finally, over the past year of learning and growing, I realized that I wanted to share my outlook on life, my “butterflies and rainbows” world in which I live. So, I figured a post about fear was quite fitting because even in that world of fairytales there are dragons and darkness to overcome.
I would like to dedicate my first post to my mommy who has shaped me into the strong, capable, loving being that I am, and Laura Geiger who inspires me with her fearlessness and passion.
Hat’s off to you both.
